The Sochi International Film Festival is a competition festival. There is a main competition, as well as non-competition screenings and retrospectives.
From 1994 to 2000 the IFF in Sochi was a festival of young cinema, showing directors' first, second, third and fourth films in the framework of its competition programme. Since 2001 the festival has become a festival of European film and screens only European films made within the twelve months. The films are evaluated by a jury composed of leading names of world cinema, and by a jury formed by members of the International Federation of Cinema Press (FIPRESCI).
Main prize of the festival is the Golden Rose.
