"Do you believe in the immortatily of the soul?" The protagonist of the film, Yakov Aratov puts this question to his aunt Platonida. "And if the soul is indeed immortal, can it exert any influence on the living once the body is dead?" Yakov leads a solitary life in Moscow in 1878, spending much of this time experimenting with photography and the phenomena of camera obscura. Then, even though he does not want it, and is kicking against it, and flathy denies it, he suddenly comes under the spell of young singer Klara Milich. After the girl's sudden death, he realizes that he cannot resist her love. Klara at a very early age decided to gather the reins of her fate in her own hands, and to do her utmost to lay hold of the right man if see ever met him. Her powerfull will does not cease exerting influence even after death. and sweeps Yakov along.
