Picture sequences illustrating twentieth century tragedies in Hungarian history and the drama behind people’s lives can often be seen in historical documentaries, often accompanied by the music of Bartók, due to its effect and pathos. Perhaps these masterpieces are used because Bartók’s work is a special focal point of the music of the 20th century. Representing modernity and tradition it forms such a complete whole, which Hungarians feel to be their own due to the musical motifs it draws upon.
The real protagonists of stories, i.e. the man in the street to whom cataclismic events happen, are always left out of historical depictions on film.
There is never the time nor attention to devote to micro-cosmic stories, although the makers of old newsreels and documents recorded these micro-happenings as well, in which – based on the principle of ’like a drop in the ocean’ – the drama of the main current is reflected. Bartók’s Micro-cosmos is like that: its small interplays invite the pictures of the archive for various things at various times: contemplation, a fast dance, dramatic reciprocation or frivolous engagement.
