"If on the train the events of Ipp are mentioned, I deny that I am from Ipp." A documentary film about the "cold days" in Transylvania. One ninght in 1940, in the village of Ipp, in Szilágyság county, the invading Hungarian army killed 157 local Romanians in a retaliatory action. A Hungarian villager: " He was the judge here that time.. he was Romanian..., and it was said, when they were exposed in the courtyard, tha he grabbed his shirt..., he tore it like this, he had a tattoo of the national arms of Hungary covering his whole chest. He said, shoot here if you dare. And they shot there.. they were heartless people". Since the end of the seventies, the anniversary of the mass murder has been a memorial day of freater an greater importance, which is a good opporunity to keep distrust at the surface. A Romanian villager at the grieving ceremony: "This very morning we talked with the Hungarians about this. Tehere have always been politicians of this kind who keep on nagging ad telling these tales so that we do not love each other, and who revel in destabilization". Wha could have happened in 1940? The question remains whether, in the course of history, the seriously damaged traditional coexistence is capable of regenerating.
