Every country has its own stars and its own blockbusters, seldom enturing beyond their respective national borders. With its Picture Europe! programme, EFP reaches a broad audience, showing them just how complex, thrilling, moving and entertaining individual stories from all over the continent are. On location, the films are presented personally by their directors or stars. The programme for PICTURE EUROPE! has been compiled from the vast plenitude of European films that were successes in their lands of origin and that bear the potential to also enthuse audiences in neighbouring countries.
OVERNIGHT , a film by Ferenc Török in Munich, Gloria Filmpalast on 22 February, 2008, 17:45 pm
All is relative and by the by in the universe of Hungarian stock broker Peter: just like the globalized stockmarket ,love, loyalty and faithfulness seem to be subject to daily oscillation. In 'overnight' we are shown 24 hours of Peter's life. These are some fairly crucial 24 hours, however, as they are the only time he's got to make two life-changing decisions: Should he, or should he not be part of the illegal deal, which is the only way to save his financial skin and what should he tell his girlfriend, who has just sent him the positive outcome of a pregnancy test in the post today? Just as the money deal seems to be working out fine, a fellow conspirator turns up to claim his share of the deal. And what about the other big question? Namely what is the prospect return on the stocks and shares market when it comes to being a dad?
As the final part of Ferenc Török's Hungary trilogy ('Moscow Square', 2001; 'Easter Sugar', 2004) 'Overnight' sketches a genuine and critical portrait of an insecure generation. This dramatic thriller shows what happens to a generation, that watched the -so called - Eastern block crumble.
The Best of European Cinema is a pilot project whose aim is to encourage the circulation of European films throughout Europe, and to cultivate new audiences for successful European films which have not had an opportunity for broader distribution outside of their native countries yet. In the launch year of this project, EFP chose three major European cities for the series. It is EFP’s intention to cultivate, encourage and educate a new audience for European films right in our own backyard.
