Milky Way (Variety)

Mise-en-scene triumphs in "Milky Way", by cult Magyar helmer Benedek Fliegauf ("Forest", "Dealer"). Much ado about stuffing (Guardian Unlimited)

E-mail Nyomtatás
Gyorgy Palfi's new picture, Taxidermia, started out as a straight family saga. It quickly warped into a grotesque parable of central Europe, complete with fiery ejaculations and curly pig's tails. "The film had a life of its own," he tells Phil Hoad.

Dolina (Variety)

E-mail Nyomtatás
A Byzantine allegory about a despotic regime seizing control of a sleepy Central European hamlet, "Dolina" boasts the most eye-popping production design this side of Terry Gilliam's "Brazil." However, Magyar helmer Zoltan Kamondi's fourth feature needs an emotional hook to bring viewers into the pic's sinister, intricately detailed world. Despite some powerful performances, this adaptation of a 1999 novel by Adam Bodor lacks a sympathetic character to identify with, making it seem cold and hollow.

An Athlete Doing Battle With His Past (The New York Times)

E-mail Nyomtatás
By MATT ZOLLER SEITZ
The term “sports film” doesn’t do justice to the director Szabolcs Hajdu’s movie “White Palms,” a punishing, beautiful drama about a troubled 30-something Hungarian gymnast who gets a job as a coach training 2001 Calgary Olympic hopefuls. The film is shot and edited in an austere, quasi-documentary style reminiscent of that of films by the Dardenne brothers (“The Son”) and cast mainly with skilled gymnasts who perform their own routines.

The Man from London (Variety)

E-mail Nyomtatás
Unlikely to bridge the gap between those who reckon Magyar director Bela Tarr is either a visionary genius or a crashing bore, "The Man From London" checks in as good but not great Tarr, more on the level of his first mature work, "Damnation" (1987), than one to sit at the Olympian table of "Satan's Tango" and "Werckmeister Harmonies." Moody, claustrophobic drama about a blue-collar stiff who stumbles on a stash of money, pic seems a hostage to its plot rather than a true Tarr reverie on human desire and greed, with less of his spiritual underpinnings. Fests will bite, nonetheless.
